Fragrant and evergreen magnolias began to be planted in the first lane of the boulevard from the end of the 19th century. The old residents of Batumi still call this place the Alley of Magnolias. The main landscaping of the boulevard with magnolia trees took place in the 30s of the last century. This process is still going on today. Old damaged magnolias are replaced annually. Today, 600 Magnolia Grandiflora trees and 51 Magnolia Soulangeana trees grow on the territory of the Boulevard. Its bare branches, at the end of winter, are covered with beautiful pink flowers and do not leave the viewer indifferent to their beauty.
Magnolia Grandiflora - is an evergreen, fragrant-flowering tree-plant of the magnolia family (magnoliaceae). It grows about 30 m in height and the size of the flower is very impressive - about 20 cm in diameter. The leaves are large, leathery and glossy. Magnolia Grandiflora originating from North America is widespread in our region, and it is this species that is called the queen of the magnolia family, due to its original appearance. It is especially beautiful during the flowering period - about 4 months from June. It is impossible for a person to ignore the flowering of magnolia, its flowers are so fragrant. The flowers close in the evening and open again in the morning. Propagated by seeds and cuttings (in greenhouses). Grows well in fertile and moist soil.
Magnolia Grandiflora spread to Europe from America in the late 17th century thanks to sailors. On every sea expedition to the American lands, Louis XIV accompanied botanists, and they were tasked with finding new medicinal plants to enrich the medicinal garden that had been planted in Paris.
It was during such an expedition that the French monk and botanist - Charles Priumet personally brought some magnolia seedlings, its flower was so much appreciated that it is said that for that period, the magnolia flower was even more expensive than a diamond stone. Gardeners even stole flowering magnolia seedlings from each other. The name - "Magnolia" was given by the Swedish naturalist, Karl Linne, in honor of the director of the botanical garden, the distinguished botanist, Pierre Magnol.
